Is standing up for the little guy ever actually worth it?

They always lose

In what context?

All contexts

The little guy meaning the underdog?

The underdog doesn't always lose. That's what makes for exciting storytelling.

Name one time an underdog has won something

I_havenobusinesshere

Go look at any data on sports championships. It's really not hard to find examples of the underdog winning.

Sports is not real life

I_havenobusinesshere

Well, if this post counts as real, you're definitely confirming your cognitive bias. You're clearly the underdog, and you're not coming out on top of this discussion.

In real life, or in fiction?

I like how you stopped replying to me, though, lol. Alright, so I could easily use myself as an example, but I'd rather not put my life story out here just as evidence for this topic.

So I'll put forth Nelson Mandela as a true underdog. A quick Google search would answer any questions you may have.

2

LuciusDickusMaximus

That is a good point. But Nelson Mandela stood up for himself. So no standing up for the underdog was needed.

MushroomLonely2784

Did nobody ever stick up for him, even as a child, ever? That's a pretty wild assumption.

Fair enough. I yield.

There's no right answer if there's no context...

Will I stand up for the cashier getting belittled because it takes longer to ring people out? Yeah.

Will I stand up for the guy on the street who has 10 guns drawn on him? No.

3

LuciusDickusMaximus

Damn where do you like that 10 guys are regularly pulling guns on a single dude?

It was just an example, but you're more than welcome to walk the streets of Detroit to experience something similar.

Always, as long as you are doing it for them.

Strategically, the most powerful player is the one you have to beat. It’s human nature to go after weaker players because that poses less risk, but all that accomplishes is making sure the powerful player has less opposition.

Yes. My mom for years would say stuff like “I’m going to get rid of the cat if she pees in the house” or “I’m gonna get rid of the cat if she bites anyone” even though she was one of the sweetest cats I’ve ever had. She also thought it was creepy that cats like to sleep next to pregnant women and “steal their energy”. One day I had enough. I slammed my hand on the table and told her to stop and that that we are never getting rid of her. I’ve never done something like that and it shut her up. I was sick of her talking badly about her, that cat was my best friend and we were each other’s whole world.

If a little guy sees someone believes in them, they are more likely to work harder and succeed

I've always stuck up for the little guy, and with the right support they don't always lose

Sure. The little guy is you and me. We should stick up for each other because we're in the same shit.

Doing a good, selfless deed for another person with no expectation of retribution? Yes. It's good to do that.

1

[deleted]

Yea I’d say so, especially if you don’t think of every life situation as win or lose

1

[deleted]

If you have money, yes. If you have a lot of money, it's always worth to help who doesn't.

If the little guys you stand up for don't win, clearly you're not doing it hard enough

1

lordm0909

You don’t do it because it’s worth it. It not being worth it is like the definition of standing up for the little guy

Yes. If not for him, for you.

Some of your comments make me feel like you're 7.

There are myriad contexts that dictate the appropriate response. Is the little guy a kid in school getting bullied? Or, is the little guy a shitty tyrant that starts problems?

As for your comment about the little guy not winning... that's the comment that makes me believe you're just out of the toddler stage (at least mentally). Go read books.

I’m a 45 year old psychologist who reads over 150 books a year. Try again.

GJackson5069

Yea... nope.

If that IS true, then you need to read a wider variety of literature.

There are so, so many examples of "the little guy" winning.

A graduate level professional in his 40s doesn't attempt "gotcha" comments on reddit, my dude.

Edit: actually who am I kidding yes they do. Carry on.

Hard to believe that with the answers your giving.

Your posts have also said that you're being homeschooled and that you're a 21yo woman. The homeschooled persona is far more plausible.

Is he going to stand up for you? I find it quite pointless to pick a fight just to loose.
