I don’t mind oil spills

People always freak out about oil spills in the ocean or whatever, but if you think about the science of it, oil and water separate and it is probably very easy to remove the oil. I am a marine biology teacher at a local high school and last Friday some seniors pulled their “Senior Prank” which involved pouring 300 gallons of gasoline into the swimming pool (I know, an expensive prank in today’s economy). A few staff members and I put in a few hours this morning to scoop out all of the oil and the swim team will be able to use it by practice tonight. So larger scale oil spills maybe require more manpower and hours to clean, but otherwise are NBD, IMO.

I don’t believe you’re a marine biology teacher and I don’t believe that high schoolers had the means and methods to execute that prank. Because I think you’re lying, I’m gonna downvote you.

But here’s why this opinion is bad anyways.

  1. Marine creatures require oxygen and light that come from the surface. Oil spills block this out causing extreme damage. (You’d know this and care if you taught marine biology).
  2. Many creatures require the surface of the water itself like marine mammals and birds and oil causes extreme damage here as well.
  3. Whether or not it’s simple to clean up oil from water doesn’t matter. It’s expensive and time consuming. It costs oil companies and governments a lot and any moderately intelligent person would know that those costs are passed on to the people.

And don’t forget that nature isn’t a swimming pool and doesn’t conveniently keep all the oil in one place to scoop up

Guess what happens when said oil gets to the shore, and into the ground. That’s why small scale spills close to the coast are so damaging

Just downvote the pinned comment so it gets removed. This is the laziest bait I've seen on this sub so far.

I have proof, if you’re interested. Also, your first point is wrong and a very popular misconception.

Qozux

Let’s say my first point is wrong (it’s not, yes there is sufficient oxygen for most fish for a while but coral and other plants still need the light. Coral is especially susceptible to this), you have nothing for the other two points and any one of them proves your hypotheses wrong.

Also, crude oil and gasoline are different.

I’m still thinking of how to disprove your other two points. Standby.

I just sent a screenshot of the original comment by u/Quzox to my two marine biologist friends who are Ivy leave professors. They “couldn’t stop laughing” at the inaccuracies. They’ll be hopping on this thread tonight to obliterate him/her. Feel free to set a remindme. Oh, and bring popcorn.

Well I sent a screen shot of your post to some of my friends one of whom is the lord commander of the armies of the sea . One is the ghost of the father of modern marine biology. And the third is a telecommuting marine biologist with 4 separate PhDs from 5 countries that teaches at Stanford ,Yale, Berkly and Oxford who face palmed so hard upon reading your drek he touched the back of his skull with his septum. So guess I'm right and you're wrong.

Can’t wait.

Still don’t believe you. If this was your area of expertise, you wouldn’t need to call in backup and you’d provide some sort of evidence.

I have evidence, but me and my two friends are planning to present it all at once. Thanks, and see you tonight.

How the hell did they carry 300 gallons of gazoline into a high school swimming pool?

For our senior prank a bunch of the farmer kids got together in the middle of the night and filled the faculty parking lot with round bales.

I wouldn't say giving them but have you ever tried keeping a hungry marine away from your Crayola stash its freaking impossible.

You clearly don’t know what you’re talking about and you’re not a marine biology teacher (what high school even has a marine biology teacher?). Oil spills kill marine animals because they need the oxygen that comes from the surface of the water. The oil can also kill them if it gets on them when they touch the surface
