I paid my Uber driver to splash a pedestrian and it turned out to be my TA

This is a crazy story from 2 hours ago and is 100% true. Any advice would be appreciated, but honestly I think I might just be completely screwed.

If you’re from the Midwest, you might know of a little springtime tradition called Splashgiving. Essentially, on the first really rainy day of spring if you’re in a car you’re supposed to find a deep puddle on the road and drive through it to drench a pedestrian. It’s basically one of those “do this and you’ll have good luck for the entirety of the season” things.

Well, yesterday it was pouring rain and I happened to be in an Uber, and I remembered about Splashgiving. I was curious if the driver knew about Splashgiving, so I asked him and he laughed and said “that’s a fucked up tradition.” As if right on cue, just at that moment maybe fifty feet in front of us there appeared the craziest, deepest puddle I had ever seen, and walking right by it was some skinny tall dude.

My driver looked and I exchanged the same “no fucking way” glance and he said “ten dollars and I’ll do it.”

“Deal,” I said. And before I knew it we were flying down the road, right into the puddle. It was the most insane road-spray I had ever seen— it looked like a tidal wave of nasty gray water. Not exaggerating, it completely knocked over the pedestrian and sent him into some dudes front lawn.

My driver must have been as shocked as I was, because for a moment he broke hard and just idled there. Later, he told me he did that because he was afraid he killed the guy and didn’t want to have done a hit and run.

The man got up and stared at us with total disgust. He was soaked, his glasses were shattered, and his pants were torn. Then I recognized him: it was my economics TA, a New Zealander in his mid-50s who was mocked by everyone. Judging from the way his eyebrows narrowed as he stared back at me, the recognition seemed to be mutual. My driver then sped off.

This man grades my papers and leads my weekly econ session on Mondays. I have no idea what to do. I mean, for all he knows it was an accident, and not one I was responsible for. But even so, I feel like he might blame me by association. Should I send him an apology email or something?
