I work at an import/export company, and this week has been hell due to a huge legal kerfuffle at Customs with one of the biggest products we deal with. Because of this, the boss has been ringing the tocsin all week and has been demanding all hands on deck.
I take work less seriously, so I’ve sort of been chilling through it, but most of my colleagues are really stressed out. I guess rightfully so, since it would be a huge hit (almost 60% of our yearly revenue) if this situation isn’t solved, and lay offs, or maybe even the insolvency, would inevitably follow.
One coworker of mine has been in the office from 6am-9pm every single day and has not been leaving his cubicle at all, even for lunch; he’s been bringing his own sandwiches and eating them while he works. I suppose sandwiches were getting dull because today he brought in chili.
It was a little sad to see him eating it cold, so I offered to heat it up for him, and after a few rounds of the old “you don’t have to do that” “oh I insist” routine, he acquiesced.
As soon as I put his chili in the microwave and turned it on, I heard commotion outside of the break room. When I came out, I saw a panicked crowd had formed around the aforementioned coworker’s desk. He had fallen and gotten back up and was mumbling incoherently, and his face was drooping like a leaf with water pooled on it. It became obvious very quickly that he had had a serious stroke, and not long after that, the EMTs arrived and took him away.
We all lost an hour of work time that we had to make up, and the coworker’s workload was evenly divided between the rest of us. For the first time in months, I was swamped with work— apparently this coworker was carrying half of the entire workload on his back.
Just as I was getting into the weeds of some detailed reports, someone emailed the whole floor with the subject line “Can whoever made a mess in the microwave clean it up?” and attached was a picture of the chili exploded all over the microwave.
I immediately felt from across the room the harsh gazes of the two coworkers who had been in the break room with me when I put the chili in the microwave. But an even more harsh gaze came from my boss, who was now sitting directly behind my cluster of cubicles and observing our every move. So I just shrugged and trashed the email.
I’m still at work right now, and the two “witnesses” keep looking at me. At one point, I saw that they were clearly messaging each other on Teams about it.
I feel like it’s too late at this point to admit it was me, much less to clean the microwave. And regardless, I’m too busy to do so right now. I’ve written this post only because my boss is currently filling out an “incident report” with HR about the unfortunate stroke incident. So tell me Reddit, am I the asshole?

YTA You made the mess. Of course YOU CLEAN UP AFTER YOURSELF! Who do you think should do it? Your mommy?
Also, why didn’t you cover it before you nuked it? It’s just not hard.

Reasons why you should clean the microwave:
Just do it and apologise.

Even a child knows they should clean up after themselves. I get you were doing a nice thing when things went to shit, and the mess wasn't intentional, but be an adult and spend five minutes taking care of it. (And if you don't, I wouldn't blame your coworkers who know it was you for gossiping about you being an AH.)

LOL
In 2 posts you actually revealed how much of an asshole you are.
You made a mess that you refuse to clean up and you did this
I’ll just get to the point here. The court reporter was a smoke show, exactly my type. Redhead with the voice of angels and demons. She looked to be about my age too, and, well, I kinda fell in love instantly.
At the end of the deposition, she was asking the attorney for one of the exhibits he used which was unable to be shared with her due to a technical glitch. To remedy this, she gave him her email, which I… sigh… wrote down. Being single for 5 years makes a man do such things.
This weekend I got really drunk and wrote her an email basically introducing myself as the brother of her recent deponent. She got back to me today and basically said “okay, what can I do for you.” And Reddit, I was talked into sending “Hopefully let me buy you a cup of coffee. Cheers, LuciusDickusMaximus”
She sent back a rejection that was so professionally cutting it still stings, but more than that, it fills me with worry. I don’t know what the fuck I was thinking. Could this affect my brother’s case? She’s technically not involved with the suit, right? So it should be fine? <
Are you sure you live on Planet Earth ?
