Did I get a good kite for my son

I got my 6 year old this kite in a 4.7m2 size before I shipped overseas. I told his mother he would know how to fly it, since I taught him on a basic 31.5 in x 27 in diamond kite and we flew it together on the first Sunday of every month for the past year.

I have no way of communicating with him or his mother due to digital quarantine, but I’m imagining they will be taking it out for a flight test today (or already have). I just checked the wind conditions back home and they look extremely strong, so it’s a perfect day too.

I wish I could be there to see the little guy let ‘er fly. You guys think I made a good choice? He really expressed his desire for a dragon shaped kite, but I really wanted to make up for the fact that he can’t fly a kite with daddy for over a year. God I miss him 😭

Not sure that's appropriate for a 6 year old... those foil kite can pull really hard... like lift you off the ground hard!

I would be concerned tbh. I have a kite of that style that’s 4.2m and it can pull me off the ground a bit in high winds. It’s dragged me down a beach a few times. I’m about 175lbs. They’re quite fun though.

extra tip...

you don't want hard winds for kite flying...

2-3Bft is perfect (8-14mph)... you want it stable, that's much more important

lol... with the right winddirection that kite could make you see that kid a lot sooner than you think...

Troll post. Folks, I know it's the internet and all, but nobody is actually as dumb as "my tiny son can handle a diamond kite so I thought this $400 power kite would be great".

I had a kite shop... and a father and 8 year old son comes in...

Hi, I want to get a blade 4.9 kite...

ok sir, do you have any experience flying powerkites?

it's not for me,, it's for my son, he's really good at skateboarding and rollerblading and wants to try this now...

sir, that's a challenging kite for a fully grown man to handle, let alone a kid... but you know what? it's six and I close now so lets go to the beach and I'll take some powerkites and you can try out some of them?

ten minutes later, launch a 4.9; it drags me about 30 ft downwind... I get back to them

tell the kid to stand in front of me with the kite high up... I let him hold the grips, my hands over his, and I just let him float to where my arms are well above my head. You see sir ,it's not skill, it's weight.... if I let go now...

and so I sold him a 2.2 blade

but that cost me some profit. I could just as well have said... oh nice, what color do you want? and with todays webshops...

never underestimate the stupidity of people

Did they ever come back for another kite? I got my first foil from Ron in Newport, RI and he gave me a similar walkthrough after purchase. That kind of experience nets you forever accounts.
