Across the hall neighbor put his eviction notice on my door. AITAH for pretending to be the police and arresting him?

My across the hall neighbor got an eviction notice posted on his door on Friday. This morning through the peephole I saw him letting in guests, and when he closed the door I saw the paper was gone. I didn’t think too much of it and about a half an hour later I went to let in my own brunch guests— two local artists I’m hoping to commission to paint a mural for my company. When we got to my place, I was shocked to see that my neighbor’s eviction notice was now on my door. I ripped it down and put it back on this door, then reassured the artists that I was not being evicted, and that my neighbor had done what the younger people at my office call a “dick move.” I could tell they didn’t believe me, and brunch was very awkward for me.

After I walked my guests out, I went back into my room and put on a park ranger suit I had from some volunteer work I did a few years back, and a Police hat from some college Halloween weekend. I pounded on my neighbors door and yelled “POLICE, OPEN UP.” I heard gasps and the hushed anxious voices of him and his guests. I shouted again “OPEN UP OR I’M KICKING THE DOOR DOWN!” After a few moments, he opened the door. He had tears in his eyes and it took him a second before he recognized me. But there was no relief in his face. I told him if he ever put his eviction notice on my door again, it would be a real cop next time, and his ass would be going to the slammer.

He came by my door after his guests left and was still crying. I let him in and he apologized. He said he was having some guests over that could support him financially in opening a business so he could get back on his feet, but he didn’t want them to know about his eviction because it would make them hesitant to throw money at him. He said he knew I usually slept in til noon on Sundays and was planning on moving the notice back to his door right after his breakfast.

I said, tough luck. He added unnecessary awkwardness into my mural meeting, and I told him we were now even. He spit on me and left. Usually when it gets to the point where you know you are in the right but someone spits on you, you have to ask: am I the asshole here?

ESH

Him for putting it on ANYONES door and spitting on you.

You for your manhood being so fragile that you impersonated a police officer and threatened to call the cops even though he didn’t do anything illegal? You know YOU impersonating a police officer is worse than what he did?

YTA. He sucks too but you escalated things so quickly and by such a degree that I feel you especially need to be called out here. Like it is genuinely unhinged that that was your response to this, and he at least had a reasonable explanation and seemed to be intending to take it down.

I’m extremely confused by the apparent principle that the eviction notice must be on some door at all times

This can't be fucking real 😂😂 Why didn't he just put the notice in a drawer or something? Why did it have to be on your door? Why did he spit on you? Why didn't you slap the notice on his back and throw him out the window? What is going on here? Lol NTA though.

Couldn’t he simply take the notice in? Like it had to be in someone’s door? I will go with ESH because it was a low move in his part, but you didn’t need to go all the way in to complain.

ESH, Impersonating a police officer is such a dick thing to do that they made it a felony.

ESH. He could have taken the notice down and put it in a cabinet instead of putting it on your door. Impersonating law enforcement is illegal in a lot of areas.

ESH

It was rude of him to put it on your door he could of just taken it and hidden it away somewhere so I'm not sure why he put it on you door maybe some bad blood between y'all already?

Never the less that doesn't justify you going all master of disguise on the guy and scaring him.

All this said he takes the biggest bit of being a loser when he spits on you, that's way wayyy out of line I'm glad to hear violence was avoided.

IMO it feels like y'all already have some issues before this situation occurred. Do your best to limit interaction with this guy report any further rudeness to the correct authorities and move on.

Lol, at all the "you are impersonating a police officer" people. He didn't actually impersonate a police officer. He didn't pull someone over, he didn't try to fine them, he didn't order them about it even imply he had any authority over the neighbor or try to get them to do or not do something.

He wasn't even wearing a realistic police officer costume.

“POLICE, OPEN UP OR I’M KICKING THE DOOR DOWN!” - no he wasn’t impersonating any POLICE OFFICER! What POLICE OFFICER? WHERE?

Lol, I used to have a friend who did that every time he knocked on the door. It's annoying, not illegal.

gentiscid

Ok, Clara! There is a difference when one is being silly or just a retard and trying to annoy neighbors and when one dress up like an officer and banging on someone’s door screaming to open up and trying to scare them.

Both are on the wrong side. Your neighbor is for sure an ASSHOLE, but you never know if someone has medical issues, and impersonating a police officer could cause them serious health issues such as heart attacks, etc. And could get you legally in trouble if he decides to report you. On the other side, spitting can be considered a battery now, knowing can be contagious to Covid, etc.

I mean, OP could have been one with heart issues, it could've cost OP business opportunities too, but that didn't stop the neighbour.

Can't say it's justified asshole territory or ESH, but someone started it.
