Any tips for spotting whales from underwater rooms?

I just booked a cruise for my son and I to make up for the terrible birthday he just had. This would only be my second cruise, so Im pretty unexperienced and have only stayed in those dingy suites on the upper desks. My uncle who unfortunately passed recently was a big cruiser and he would always tell me how his trick was to make friends with the crew on day one and get secret permission to sleep in the underwater rooms, and that there would always be several guests who would do the same time (apparently there were often intimate adult entanglements, but that’s neither here nor there). I’m planning on doing this with my son and I’m really hoping there is a window so we can watch some whales— he really loves those mysterious beasts. Any cruisers here who have gotten the “underwater package” and have any tips for spotting whales?

OP must be harvesting karma. There is no way someone would ask something this stupid.

It says it’s a burner account for multiple to use on the profile I just saw that. I didn’t even know that was a thing on here.

Oh my, I think Uncle was telling some tall tales. There are no windows below the waterline and if there were, there'd be no way to see a whale, the engines are powerful, the wales wouldn't just be swimming next to the boat. If you want to see whales or possibly dolphins, your best bet is to go up on deck or get a balcony with a pair of binoculars and be patient. The last two times I arrived in Port Canaveral, a pod of dolphins swam alongside the ship playing in the water for a while. It was fun to watch from my stateroom balcony

Whales definitely do swim near the boat, seen that firsthand but agreed, there are no underwater windows.

Oh, I'm sure they swim near the boat, but I can't see them getting close enough to the boat for someone to be able to watch them through an underwater porthole. Visibility in deep water with all the bubbles from the engines, would have to be really low.

What if it's not moving?

Then they'd be tied up at the port and there would be a 50/50 chance that the imaginary underwater window was facing the dock and not the open sea. At that point, you'd be better off renting a glass bottom boat tour at whatever dock you're at.

There are ports where they tender in. In this imaginary underwater window I think it might be plausible. In Cabo when we were parked there were several whales that swam right by the boat. Was eating lunch and looked straight down when I saw one. Now given the height it still might have been too far to see if there happened to be a window but I am not going to 100% write it off.

We had a mother and calf frolicking around the ship while we were in Bora Bora, so maybe a chance to see out of the imaginary window in port.

Work on your whale calls. There is usually a microphone in those rooms that broadcast out into the ocean. It’s mainly used to talk to those who are scuba diving around the boat but if you really nail down those whale calls then I’m sure it’ll help draw them closer. Maybe watch Finding Nemo for help?

You made us laugh almost as much as OP's question. Thank you for that.

The crew member would be left on the next port of call and would have to pay his way back home.

Anyway, all the cabins on decks 2 and 3 are shared and they don't have portholes. Usually, only officers have portholes on deck 4 and upwards.

Probably was fine 40 years ago. My aunt got pregnant on a cruise with my cousin by a crew member about 36 years ago lol

LOL, officer's wife here. My husband is laughing even louder than me.

He asked me to tell you to take a Xanax before you sleep. You might see some whales in your sleep.

1st: There are no windows underwater (decks 2 and 3); 2nd: The crew is absolutely forbidden to take guests into the crew areas; 3rd: Only officers have cabins with windows (usually deck 4 and upwards);

4th: wtf are you suggesting: to take your son to sleep with someone (be intimate) with a crew member (risking that crew member to be found, considering there are cameras everywhere in the crew areas and removed from the ship on the next port)? Disgusting.

5th: This was my husband's words, "They are closing his windows as soon as there is bad weather on the mv he is." The only way you have to access those cabins would be to be a crew member, some inspector at ports or a relative of a crew member.

This account is a burner karma seeking account. Multiple use it, it says it in their bio. (I don’t expect people to look there but I was assuming this was fake af lol)

I'm a former deck officer and completely bewildered. I think the uncle may have had a few drinks before this tale.

P.S. My husband already watched dolphins and whales (distant) from his portholes (he was an MMO before swapping to the cruise industry, so his job was literally to spot marine mammals in the ocean). However, once I did a cruise to Iceland, the sea was rough (the steward didn't close the portholes because the bridge didn't think it was dangerous (and it wasn't)) and I can guarantee you, I didn't see any whales or dolphins from the portholes.

Why’re you using a shared account to ask questions about a cruise? No snark, genuinely curious.

Also, no. Not a thing. If the waters are rough enough the crews windows go under water, they have to put the guard over it. There’s videos on tiktok about this.

Yes, my husband's steward closes the portholes on my husband's cabin as soon as there are rough seas.

“underwater package”

Your uncle might want to speak to Lloyd's of London about that

To be fair ppl do bang to the crew. There’s a girl knocked up on 90 day fiancé that hooked up with a bartender on a cruise line. I’m surprised he was not fired.

On Alaska cruise we had balcony but only saw whales after we got off ship and they came next to the docks in Ketchikan. People started running & yelling towards the dick area where they were and it was very easy to see them.

This is such an outrageous story. Obviously, your uncle had a grand imagination, and this probably never happened.. crew-members are not going to risk their jobs for taking non-crew members in that area. I don’t think anyone recognize how many cameras there are posted throughout the entire ship. None of this would go unnoticed.

I am 99% sure you don’t actually mean this and this is some kind of elaborate joke, but it’s deeply funny that you think crew cabins have windows.

I'm a crew member and I can assure you that there is no windows down there 😂😂 our cabins is very small with bunk beds. We have one main hallway and we can spot a passenger real quickly 😂 we're not even allowed to walk without name tags so no passenger would ever be down there without a guide, and they can never sleep down there either😂
