I have to choose between my preferred baby name or taking my fiancés’ last name. Or naming my child after a tragedy.

After she saved me from a flood when I was six years old, I made a promise to my grandma that I would give my future daughter her name, Cher. A few decades later, I am still very much intending on fulfilling that promise. I am almost five months pregnant and found out this week that it’s going to be a girl. My fiancé and I are thrilled. The big problem, though, is that his last name is Noble. Meaning if I name my child after my grandmother AND I take my husbands last name and pass it down, it’s going to be named Cher Noble, which sounds like the infamous atomic disaster. My husband doesn’t know about the name “Cher” yet— I thought it was bad luck to tell him before we knew the gender, and then after this unfortunate dilemma which I’ve been anticipating in terror since the day he proposed became very real, I couldn’t bring myself to tell him I’ve been considering not taking his last name. And now I’m really leaning towards keeping my last name. I think I have to tell him tonight, but I know he’s not going to be happy.

I would discuss the first name with your fiancé before making decisions about what last name to take. A name is 2 yeses and he may not be a fan of the name Cher.

I’m very close to someone with kind of a notable odd name like that… it’s brutal listening to every person they meet say something about it.

If your grandmother knew the situation, what would she have chosen? Would it still be an honor to her if it causes you both grief?

Another option is to have a longer name with Cher as nickname? Cheryl? Cherish? Cherise? Cherilyn?

Baby names require two yes’s. If there’s a no you move on to a new name.

If your fiancé is on board, i would 100% choose a variation of the name. Do not do just Cher with Noble. That’s awful. Cherie or Cheryl or I agree ask name nerds for some suggestions of other names with Cher in it. Or ask Google or chat gpt lol

I'm not sure why you would get to unilaterally pick both the first name and the last name? Names are supposed to be a compromise.

right? you’re going to marry this person but you’re deciding your child’s names solo?

Hahaha honestly I think it’s a beautiful homage and if you give her a good middle name to break it up, she can choose to go by that when she’s older if she gets a lot of comments about her first and last name together. Also, my parents made my initials BLT without realizing, so at least you have thought about it.

I don’t think you can decide the first name of your child before ever meeting your partner and their other parent. If your fiancé is on board with it after you tell him that’s cool, but if you insist on using it even if he doesn’t like it then I think you’re being a jerk. And that’s independent of the last name. It’s perfectly fine to think the baby should have your last name, but deciding the first and last name without any input from him is wrong if you expect to have a functioning partnership.

Would it be an option to name your daughter after your granny, without actually using that name? For instance, after her favourite flower, or even (since Cher means beloved) picking another name with the same meaning... Amy... Mia... There are a lot of options.

There are multiple ways to honour her, without using a direct name.

Cher is a nice name and you may still want to honor grandma regardless, but i think it’s weird your grandma made you promise? And you never told your SO about the promise? All around that’s kind AH behavior

You have lots of options. Firstly, 'Cher' is a lovely name and you have a great back story for it.

Option One - Just go with it, kids find issues with most names but it sounds fine to me.

Option Two - Go with one of the other comments and put a nice middle name in between or ho with Cher as the middle name.

Option Three - Go with your suggestion, but will that cause uou other problems?

Go with what feels right yo you and your partner but tak to him about it.

I knew two girls growing up named Sheralee /Cheralee, and they went Cher. Could you use Cheralee Noble?

I definitely thought of it right when I read your husband’s last name. Maybe Charisse? I find Cheryl would still be quite close. I would also suggest speak in to your finance before having the dilemma of deciding

Maybe a variation of Cher? Or you could also hyphenate your last names? Don’t worry you’ll figure it out, my husband and I had trouble with our daughter’s name and we finally found the right one that we both love!❤️

Find a full name that Cher would be short for for example cherish and for arguments sake I. Going to use Sophie as well

So baby could be

Sophie cherish noble and Cher is her pet name

Or cherish Sophie noble and Cher is the pet name

Or Cher Sophie noble but it only avoids there chernoble issues if you use the full name

I'm sure you have already thought of these options but just in case.. You could hyphenate both last names, you could use Cher as a middle name, you could give a middle name that is usable as a first name so if she's in a setting where she cares about it she can use the middle name, you could expand cher into something new like Cher-Marie or cherie-ann (example not a name suggestion) and still call her Cher but there is the buffer between first and last names, you could think of a name like Cheryl or Cherie that would have cher as a nickname.

There is a name help reddit somewhere that might have good ideas.

r/namenerds they can be kinda brutal though. I like the idea of Cheryl or Cherie, an honor name doesn't have to be exact.

Cher Noble will definitely end up on the circle jerk or tradgedeigh pages
