Boss is throwing me under the bus for her missing pre-hit

I just started at the UPS store and honestly have been loving it. I’m a thinker and a writer, and I like a job where you can do the work while also being able to be totally engrossed in your own headspace. The one thing that takes me out of it is the loud ass packing tape. That “GRZEEEEEEK” sound it makes is noxious to my ears and absolute hell on my overly sensitive teeth. So, less than a week in I ordered silent packing tape. Call me a pussy, a softie, whatever— it works and it works well. In fact, the adhesive on the new tape is stronger than the stuff they have in the Store, so there is no downside.

Today I arrived in the AM in a very chipper mood. It was great a peaceful, and tomorrow my favorite comic is in town and I have tickets, so I was having a great Friday.

The serenity was broken around noon when a driver came in asking where my boss was. I hadn’t seen her yet so I told him I assumed she was just in her office. I went to go check and the driver, who seemed to be in a huff, followed me. Forgetting my manners a bit, I opened her door without knocking. I wish I hadn’t, because my boss was sleeping at her desk. We had to shake her awake and when she came to her senses she angrily told me to leave immediately and shut the door behind her so she could “discuss matters” with the driver.

After the driver left, she called me into her office and asked me if I had been taping boxes that morning. I said yes, then sheepishly explained that I was using zero noise tape— she didn’t strike me as the type to look kindly upon rocking the boat of traditional company procedure, so I had avoided telling her about the tape switch.

Turns out it wasn’t the breach of procedure that pissed her off so much, but instead it was the fact that I was using tape that didn’t wake her up. She told me that her Friday tradition was “extra nap day”— she would come in very early, get things set up, and sleep until she woke up to the sound of taping, which her body had apparently become accustomed to as a “natural alarm clock.” I thought she was joking, but I texted a coworker who confirmed it: “as soon as I start taping, I know she’s gonna come out of there within five minutes.”

The driver is going to call corporate, and my boss told me point blank that she’s going to throw me under the bus. I told her that I really don’t think I am going to get in trouble for not waking her up from her sleep, as that’s ridiculous. And she told me cryptically that that’s not the story she’s going to tell, and that she will do anything to keep her job.

Do I need to worry about this? Only thing I’m really concerned about is the tape; not sure if corporate gets their socks in a screwdriver over things like that. Also not looking forward to a bad relationship with my boss if she keeps her job, but I’ve had some bad supervisor before so it’s nothing new for me.

You gotta sober up if you're trying to make sense. I don't blame the manager. You sound like you're always under the influence at work.

None of this makes sense…

1.) drivers don’t give a shit what we do. 2.) drivers don’t call corporate. 3.) who has an “office”? 4.) you did nothing wrong

There’s a lot more to this than you might be aware of. Maybe she has bad blood with the driver? Maybe he means he’s going to tell the owner?

All of it sounds ridiculous and incredibly dramatic

Why is the driver calling corporate? That doesn’t make any sense. UPS doesn’t give a shit what The UPS store does.

This story makes little sense. Why would you buy your own tape? Stop that. I don't know about your store but it's common to burn through 6-12 rolls of tape a week. I mean I could rationalize buying a pen, tape measure, or box cutter but not tape. Beyond that, this seems like an unrelated drama that doesn't need to affect newbies. Stop buying tape.

What is a pre-hit? Did you mean prelim? 😂

I don't think you're gonna be in trouble if you explain exactly what you saw and what your manager said. If she's not the owner she's gonna catch shit for sleeping on the job.

I don't know what she did to piss off the driver but if he was angry enough to go confront her and allegedly is going to report her to Corporate, she must have fucked all the way up. Either way, don't let yourself get caught up in what is clearly an issue between them. FWIW though, I've never seen a driver report a person at the store. Big caveat though, I have never seen anyone at a store piss off a driver. Anyone who's smart is gonna have a great relationship with their driver to keep things running smoothly.

Stop buying store supplies with your own money. The quiet tape is way more expensive than reg packing tape. If the noise is an issue ask your boss's boss if it's possible to switch over (they will prob say no). If this is non-negotiable for you, start looking for a new job now, it's only gonna get worse during peak.

The driver at our store did report the owner because they weren’t giving him his end of day at 6 and kept making him wait and then afterwards the owner was mean to him and made him sit in his truck during the winter instead of waiting in our store after he was done loading. They don’t like each other but the driver can’t say ANYTHING to them because it’s their store and they can run it how they want but when it comes to “end of day” he was getting accused of stealing time from his boss so he had to report them.

So you just started, and they gave you access to order inventory, and you spent 3 times the cost of regular tape for quiet tape? And what the hell is pre hit? Been here for 6 months and never heard of pre hit.

Is your boss the owner or a manager? There are a couple of confusing things in this story. What did the driver need to talk to your boss about. Why the fuck does the driver care if the boss was sleeping. In my experience drivers don’t care what the hell is going on in a store, they are just there to pick up packages. Our drivers would probably laugh about and apologize for waking them up. I doubt corporate gives two shits if an owner was taking a nap in their office so I’m guessing this is a manager. Again they would have to speak to the owner because corporate ups is not going to care unless it’s something that hurts their brand image.

Good for you man. That's the only way to get through this miserable job. It comes with shit owners and no benefits and shit Amazon customers to top it off.

You should probably run for the door now. Lots of red flags. But stand up for yourself. Usually no one really cares because these are usually independently owned. Maybe you can have your boss's position. Unless of course he is the owner, the owners son, the owners sister, the owners cousin, the owners twice removed ex brother in law.... Which is probably the case.

Good luck.

Fr if this was a bigger sub I’d be suspicious of creative writing but this is just so wild. Could OP be confusing the area rep for a driver? Even then, they wouldn’t care if the owner is napping lol
