Nah, they intentionally send a pin that's far away from any possible location to make sure no one would agree to go there.

The scam will probably start once you find this Maggie person on social media. Since you've already invested this much effort, you're invested in saving the "trapped" person too, so it'll be easier for this "Maggie" to convince you to send "her" money through Steam gift cards or cash app or zelle, which she'll claim she needs in order to send help to her "trapped friend".

Of course, she'll also claim to reimburse you several times the amount you give her, at a later date, as a reward for your kind act.

I had assumed they were just trying to get "Maggie" inside the 'friend' layer of socials to harvest contacts and anything incriminating and then go for some good old-fashioned blackmail.

I know that you're right, because I've seen the "gift card" scam a billion times.

But why the theatrics? If they were in a car accident and are actively losing blood as we speak, how on God's green Earth am I finding another person, driving to the store, buying cards, driving back, and giving the codes to the person in time?

The scam already works sometimes, otherwise they wouldn't do it. Just feels way too complicated to work.

News report the next day:

Gatlinberg man dies from loss of blood after driving off a cliff. An extremely rare blood type, he would have survived if he had gotten a transfusion from Maggie Lizen of Bradford. The two had a pact that they would always be there if the other needed. Unfortunately, she arrived at the hospital minutes too late to help him.

His last words, choked with his own innocent blood, were reported to be: “Mf blocked me.”

Met a crypto catfisher on Tinder once. Didn't realize it immediately, took a couple days for them to try to bait me. Once I did realize, I was mad, so I strung them along for like a week. Eventually I got bored so I told them I wanted to invest in crypto. They moved right in to steal-all-my-money mode. After an hour of torturing them by pretending to not understand a single instruction and messing up literally every step they gave me multiple times (there were lots of quotes from the HIMYM episode where Marshall finds out he'll be a judge and his mother can't remove the picture she posted), I let them know that I had spent enough time dabbling in crypto to have smelled their scam a mile away, and that there was never any crypto for them to steal (I cashed out all my holdings a couple years ago and never looked back), and that I had been purposefully wasting their time.

I got everything from them still pretending to be in character and hurt, to finally breaking down and threatening me. They seemed to have forgotten we were on WhatsApp, so I just forwarded the convo along to the local police and blocked them.

I'm sure nothing actually came of it, but it was indeed fun screwing with that shit head for a week.

The first messages are meant to filter out anyone with even a bit of critical thinking.

That's why scam messages are so obviously fake. That's by design. You want to be left with only extremely trusting, gullible people.

Then once you find one of those, it's easy to sell them shit.

Legit this is the best comeback. Had someone fake committing suicide on me and so I had the police going door to door on a military base looking for that boi. "I'm fine! Call them off!" were his last words before I heard a knock on his front door.

2,541

PhasePsychological90

I'd legitimately call the cops and send them to the location. Then I'd tell the scammer I'm on my way with Maggie. When the cops get there and find three junkies with illegal firearms, waiting to rob people, it's a great day.

1,230

BluebirdLivid

Who the fuck should we send?!? All the bad shit the cops do and the one time they might be useful you’d be like “sounds dangerous, let’s just let this criminal go”. ?!?

It’s not a trap if the cops know what’s up. It’s a reverse trap.

And if this is an attempted robbery or something worse then it would be pretty shitty to just let it go because you didn’t want to tell the cops because they might get hurt. What if some innocent person is killed the next time they try it? I don’t think that’s what’s happening here but it could be.

Must have owned a Ford, probably on their way to uncle Rick.

“I have shit in my car”

I thought they were trapped and had shit themselves when I first read it

"No, don't call the police, I'd be so embarrassed if they saw that I shit myself".

How you gonna iMessage without internet, it would go through as a text. Also, I’m dying, so…..I thought I’d text a random.

Not to mention sending a gps pin while supposedly having no internet. The holes in the story are a solid mile wide with this one.

You don't need internet for GPS to work :)

I've been watching a lot of scam baiting so I've seen pretty much all the big ones (and some more obscure ones) but I've never seen this. Seeing as they aren't using a burner phone number, I would say this is more of an attempted kidnapping/murder than a scam. And they're using normal English (most scammers spam "kindly" in almost every text they send)

Definitely dodged a bullet by not taking them seriously.

Scammers are Bioshock fans. Confirmed.

Just Indian. I don't know why they all decided to use 'kindly' in every request, maybe it's their native language, maybe it's cultural, but whatever it is, it's very irritating.

As a native Gatlinburger I found this hilarious.
