I JUST CANT CRACK THIS STUPID TEST WTF

I drive the bus for the local high school and a few weeks ago I found a book of practice tests while cleaning out my vehicle at the end of a shift. Doing the crossword puzzle while driving got boring so I decided to start taking the ACT and… I just can’t figure out this test! Im barely hovering at a 28 because the science section fucks me up every time and the grammar section should at least take me out to dinner first… I’m at least good at reading because I’m used to speed reading the paper while on the job. But geez, you all that are taking this to determine college decisions, I feel for you!

So, did you go to college? If not, sounds as if you're still in good enough shape, academically, to go! Maybe consider your next career. Lots of high-paying jobs with certain specific community college 2 yr certifications.

Sounds like you need to learn some grammar rules and learn how to better read the science questions. What helped me with science was reading the questions literally and taking them at face value. I used to overthink with science.

Yeah it could be tuff if it were the only option. A .73 g loading means practicing isn’t as effective as for other tests. Luckily, it’s not the only option. The SAT has a much lower g loading, and there’s even the option to go test optional (though some schools are moving away from that again)

These are for the most recent versions of the tests. The other forms of the SAT and ACT are much easier for which to find g-loading studies.

The SAT one is based on the experiences of lots of people and vibes, while the ACT one is based on this, this, and this

Note that .73 is the most conservative estimate for the ACT’s g-loading, as a more accurate estimate would likely be ~.76-.77

can you explain what g-loading is? im a graduate student so took these tests in 2017 and don’t remember this term

A 28 is still a pretty solid score. There are people out there who have to study A LOT in order to get that, so you’re fine. You also don’t need to take the ACT since you’re not in school (I think) so don’t even worry about it it!

When I took the act I didn't take it as seriously as I should have because I was a kid taking almost every advanced learning option available (except AP English and APUSH) and already had a decent sat score I was happy with.

Science was my best section I think, then reading and grammar because honors English classes were pretty good, then math. I got a 29 because my math score was 25 or 26, which was way lower than I ever should have gotten considering I skipped a grade and was in math classes 2-3 years ahead of grade level after skipping. I was taking 8th grade math as a 6th grader (right after skipping), then finished algebra 1 and 2 as well as geometry in 7th and 8th grade (my schools curriculum combined algebra 1 + first half of geo into "math 1" then the 2nd half of geo and algebra 2 into "math 2"), then took pre-calc as a freshman and I was taking AP calc bc when I took the act.

Anyways I rambled a bunch, the only point of bringing all that up is to say anything close to or over 30, especially when you've been removed from the material for a while, is a really good score that I think you could be happy with

Getting a 25 in math while taking BC Calc seems a little strange. There isn't really anything beyond algebra on the test from what I remember.

Correct. Most of the material on the test was math I did in 7th and 8th grade (typical for 9th, 10th, 11th graders)

I didn't respect the test enough and didn't review anywhere near as much as I should have. During my junior year when I took the test I had been doing calc for the last 3 years (pre-calc, AP Calc Ab, AP Calc Bc). I know I could have gotten 30+ on the math section and my goal was a 30 overall. Either way I got into a college I'm happy with so that's what matters

Also could be the case that being advanced forward so much in math meant I missed some stuff. I used to leave the 2nd grade class to go to a 3rd grade room for math, then when I tested out to double advanced I did my math in the gt room. In 5th grade they had me bike over to the middle school for first period 8th grade math before I skipped I grade. Then with my district combining algebra 1 and 2 with geometry over 2 years I feel like geometry was always a weak point. And most kids are suggested to take a class called "math 3" which is an extension of algebra and geometry but advanced kids were recommended to skip math 3 and go straight to pre-calc if you did well in math 1 and 2. So I think I missed (by testing out of or by curriculum) 6th grade math entirely, parts of 7th and 8th grade math, and 11th grade math entirely

I took ap calc bc in 10th grade and got a 36 on the math portion without studying.

Weird... I did have a full year of geometry though. I don't think that would explain everything and you might also be weak in normal algebra skills. None of the math questions felt like trap questions to me.

I don't think it's strange, it's just everyone is different. While taking calc BC my score on Math was a 27, and I do just fine in class. My mind just goes blank during timed testing.
