Keep hearing someone playing a piano in my house. Don’t have a piano or any nearby neighbors.

As the title suggests, I live alone and my nearest neighbors live a mile away. My house, which I inherited from my great aunt, was built in the late 1800s. My great aunt was convinced it was a bit haunted from civil war spirits, and always told me and my siblings growing up that they (the spirits) liked it when she kept everything as it was. She said she noticed strange phenomena, like flickering lights or distant screams, in the weeks after she rearranged any furniture or had a room painted.

Now, since I moved in a year ago I haven’t noticed any of this. Granted, I kept everything in the house as I found it for the first year— this was in part due to the superstitions of my aunt but a large part of it was that my brother was trying to assert his claim on the house and my lawyer said I shouldn’t do any renovations until the matter was settled. I hired a PI who dug up some dirt on my brother which I used to get him to drop the claim. By the time I was legally allowed to make changes to the house, I had gotten pretty comfortable with the fact that my aunt was a paranoid woman and that there were no ghosts. Or so I thought.

I was forced for the past year to listen to music on the house’s gramophone (which lost its charm within a month or so) or just play it from my phone. I’m an audiophile who loves Freeform jazz, so I used the money my brother paid me to buy an expensive sound system with the most sophisticated speakers I could find. I set them up in the living room and they sounded INCREDIBLE. I had multiple eargasms while testing them out.

Last night, I put on my favorite jazz record to relax after a stressful week. As I lighting some candles, it sounded like someone playing piano upstairs. It was so eerie that I ran upstairs to check, even though I knew there was no piano in the house. I heard and saw nothing, so I came back down to the living room, and there it was again. I turned off the stereo and went to investigate every room with a flashlight. Nothing. I came back to the living room and calmed down, assuring myself that I was hearing things. I turned the stereo back on, and went to get my painting supplies. As I was setting up the easel, there it was AGAIN.

At that point I was convinced it was either my brother getting revenge through a prank or that my aunt was right about the spirits not liking changes to the house. Not wanting it to be the latter, I called my brother and accused him of a scheme. He told me off, saying that he didn’t have time to set up pranks these days since he and his family were in between motels. He sounded very sincere and my brother can’t lie to save his life, so I believed him. Which led me to conclude the house is haunted.

I could not sleep at all last night so i had to go to my other house which is an hour away. I’m scared to go back to my aunts house, but think i will in a bit to get rid of those speakers. After all, my aunt lived to 99 in that house, so I guess as long as I respect the ghosts, they’ll respect me.

I don't care for roommates. I had a spirit at my 4 year old house. He never came in but stood at the front door. My daughter also saw him. I really felt sorry for him. It was like he was waiting for us to open the door. After 10 years I told him he had a family waiting for him. The people he was looking for were not at this house anymore. Please go to your loved ones. We never saw him again.

Doesn't seem like an active haunting, but residual energy. You're good!

Whatever you encountered in that house does not seem to be malevolent, but if anything, a cultured kind of spirit. So no need to be particularly afraid.

We’ve had a similar experience at my mom’s house. There used to be a tent church where her house is now. Sometimes you’ll hear what sounds like old southern gospel music. I honestly thought mom and I were losing our minds until my stepdad moved in and said, “sometimes I hear music when I’m home alone. Is that normal?” But we all just accept it and move on about our day.

Eerie, sounds residual so mostly good. Since it was probably used for the civil war. Probably more intelligent hauntings around the property?

These are residual ghosts they repeat haunting from the past like a rewind film they aren't spiritually interactive

Zero reason why it should be that long. But some houses can be super haunted like that. But the haunted elements might not show up to everyone only those who are susceptible. These may be consciousness echoes.

Residual music. Obviously at some.point in the history of the house there WAS a piano in there. Nothing to be worried about.

Do I need to get the house cleansed? Or will this just be a permanent thing no matter what? I think I could get used to it…

Id accept it. No harm No foul. Personally I believe in the paranormal, I've had too many experiences I can't explain. That's me though. Where it's just music you're hearing, why freak out ? Talk to the spirits , let them know that you realize they're there.

It may sound crazy , but let them know you accept them being there and you don't mean them any harm or disrespect.

Make your own judgement, IF you choose to accept the fact they're there , don't let anyone change your mind.

Hold on, you have two houses and live by yourself, while your brother and his family have to live in motels? And you dug up dirt on your brother with a PI?? Good, I'm glad those spirits haunted you, you deserve it.

People living in motels are usually living in motels for a reason.

I had a similar experience happen once in my house. It sounded like someone was playing gramophone music downstairs in my basement while people were talking. When i went to go check it out no one was there. I called my parents to make sure no one was home as well. Really creepy situation.
