What's not to get? He had kids when he was in his early 20s, and some more in his 30s. Got divorced and is now in his 40s. He decided to go back to college, for the full college experience (think a Rodney Dangerfield movie) and is really invested in the greek lifestyle. He told his boyfriend he wants an open relationship so he can really live the college life and he didn't consider his boyfriend would also have sex with other people.
