[TOMT] [2000s] Jeopardy episode where there was a category about Ancient Rome in Double Jeopardy and one of the contestants pronounced “Nero” oddly

I know this isn’t a ton to go off of but I remember thinking that the way the contestant said Nero was so distinct (he said it “Near-Hoe”) that I was surprised Trebek didn’t point it out. I’m posting in hopes that someone remembers this. I want to also say that no one got the final jeopardy right, but I’m not totally sure.

The reason I want to know is that I know for a fact that the day I watched this episode was the same day I was at a grocery store and a shelf collapsed on me and I was trapped for a whole minute. It was traumatic and took me a while to feel okay. I remember the way the guy said Nero was the first laugh I had after the incident.

I was telling the story to a lawyer friend and he said I could have sued them because of the chipping my hip that I endured from the accident. Well, I don’t really remember when it was, besides that it was in the mid 2000s, and have no real evidence of it. However, if I knew what episode of jeopardy that was, I could know the exact date of the accident and try to force the store owners to hand over the security tapes and perhaps incident reports from that day. I’m not sure if they had a good camera angle showing the aisle I was in, but if it had audio I’m sure it picked up me yelling for help.

Two things:

  1. I would post this in the Jeopardy! subreddit
  2. Try searching the J-Archive: https://www.j-archive.com (you can search Rome, Nero, etc. and applicable clues will come up)

Also, I don’t know if your episode will be able to be streamed anywhere. I guess they’re struggling with their only streaming service, Pluto rn.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but there's a .00001% chance that the tape is still there, and if it is, you won't be able to force them to give it to you without a subpoena. The statute of limitations for the injury has almost certainly passed.

Here's a list of all the archived games where "Nero" was part of a correct response:

https://www.j-archive.com/search.php?search=%40cr+Nero&submit=Search

If any of those clues jogs your memory, you can click on the game link and see if it sounds familiar. That would get you the date the game was played.
