Will my son be affected by eating plastic???

I made eggs for me and my son and after making the second noticed that a chunk of the spatula had melted off. I wasn’t sure if had melted off right then and there or if I simply hadn’t noticed it before I started cooking. Since I have GERD, I served my son the second egg that had the potential plastic. He said it tasted extra gooey and starchy, so I guess there was some plastic in there. Will he be okay?

About participation in the comments of /r/nutrition

Discussion in this subreddit should be rooted in science rather than "cuz I sed" or entertainment pieces. Always be wary of unsupported and poorly supported claims and especially those which are wrapped in any manner of hostility. You should provide peer reviewed sources to support your claims when debating and confine that debate to the science, not opinions of other people.

Good - it is grounded in science and includes citation of peer reviewed sources. Debate is a civil and respectful exchange focusing on actual science and avoids commentary about others

Bad - it utilizes generalizations, assumptions, infotainment sources, no sources, or complaints without specifics about agenda, bias, or funding. At best, these rise to an extremely weak basis for science based discussion. Also, off topic discussion

Ugly - (removal or ban territory) it involves attacks / antagonism / hostility towards individuals or groups, downvote complaining, trolling, crusading, shaming, refutation of all science, or claims that all research / science is a conspiracy

What I'd worry about as a non-medical person is that as the melted plastic cools pieces of it could become sharp, and if any those pieces are big enough they could scratch or injure the gut as they are passing through. Keep an eye out for symptoms like stomach pains or fever in either of you. And maybe eat plenty of bulky fibre foods in the next few days to help flush through any wayward bits. But next time, toss the eggs.

We constantly eat plastic in this house. Like willy Wonka's chocolate factory chewing on cups. We're fine.

If you're really concerned to relieve your mind you could call poison control, I called them a couple of times when my kids were little, they were at the time very helpful and nice.

your title question is too general but the plastic your son ate off the melted spatula will not hurt your kid. It will be excreted. During the particle's journey through the gut, very small amounts will be released and can be resorbed, depending on the type of plastic (PC/PP is less "soluble" than PE, always take the harder plastic). We don't even know how many microplastic particles we consume each day with our food, so...

You fed plastic to your son on purpose, but would not eat it yourself? That's fucked up.

How does eating plastic affect this? Can't find any litterature talking about plastic consumption + GERD. This is a reflux issue, right? So how does eating plastic make that worse? also still fucked up to feed plastic to your Kid. Should have made the Kid a new portion or taken the parent role and eaten "the bad portion" yourself.

Having GERD has nothing to do with you spending 2 minutes to make another egg so your kid doesn’t eat plastic.

What the fuck lmao.

I mean same but good luck not being full of microplastics if you live on earth.

Of course you don’t, you give it to your kid so he can eat it
