Is it feasible to use a “deer frozen in headlights” to our advantage?

My weight causes me to be very loud in the woods and all the walking venison seems to escape before I get close enough to shoot it. Recently was reminded of the whole “deer in headlights” thing after my boss said it about me during a work presentation for which I was totally unprepared. Could a good strategy be that one Hunter drives a truck toward the deer, it freezes up, and another hunter, i.e. me, sneaks up and shoots it? I miss the thrill from when I was 250 pounds lighter.

So many things wrong:

1) Illegal

2) Fucking dangerous

3) Shitty hunting ethics combined with illegal hunting ethics

4) Stupid

That's called spotlighting my guy.

It's called spotlighting and highly illegal.

What makes it illegal?

metamega1321

Regulations. It’s just way too easy to do and unsporting so basically everyone agreed not to allow it.

I always found that line of argumentation so silly. We literally have guns and evolved human brains. Why are we pretending it was ever “fair” for the deer?

spizzle_

It’s not fair for game populations. Do you know anything about the North American game management system and why it exists?

Edit: this “guy” is 100% trolling. Looking at their posts they’ve been both a man an and a woman, a lawyer and a grocery store stocker, young and old, single and married in the span of less than a year. The list goes on and on. Downvote and move on.

I’m a lawyer who is too busy with staying up to date on commercial trends to keep up with these things; could you summarize?

spizzle_

I basically already did. This has to be a shitpost. No way a lawyer can be this thick. I’m talking mentally.

No comment on whether OP is a lawyer, but as a lawyer myself, I can tell you that intelligence is not a prerequisite for passing the bar

My stepbrother is one of the smartest people I know. His team won state knowledge bowl three years in a row in HS, he has near a photographic memory, he went to two Ivy League schools and one was for law school. He’s also a complete idiot in many ways.

This guy isn’t a lawyer as he’s claimed to be both male and female and married and single and divorced and tons of other stuff in other posts. He’s just a troll.

Also just look it up real quick on wiki since you seem to have some time on your hands right now if you actually care.

You literally just said it was too hard for you to kill a deer with your gun and brain alone? Isn't that the purpose of this post and question?

I am disadvantaged so I need something to level the playing feel

northernredneck77

Fat doesn’t equal disadvantaged! as a fellow fat guy, if your weight it holding you back from doing some thing you enjoy, then it’s time to make some lifestyle changes. Being a busy lawyer isn’t an excuse for that

I think this guy is trolling. A lawyer, "too fat to hunt" and can't change that, has never heard of spotlighting, and "levels the playing feel"? A lawyer doesn't know the term playing field? There's no way this is real and I feel dumb for engaging and commenting now lol

You’re probably right, the disadvantaged line struck a nerve that I couldn’t move past.

Clearly I couldn't resist either lol.

Generally only works at night when the light is all the deer can see and legal hunting is restricted to daylight hours.

Deer hunting at night, shooting from a vehicle, wildlife harassment; just to name a few. Not to mention the safety implications of shooting near your truck friend. And I do not know if you really understand how "deer in headlights" work. they are not frozen it is a prey reaction to stay still in order to confuse the predator. Once there hear a sound or see additional movement they'll run. You will be better using a ground blind or a tree stand.

Thats called spotlighting and is illegal in most places. Most would consider it to be unethical aswell. If youre not fit enough to stalk anymore, try to sit and wait by a trail.

The problem is that deer literally freeze when headlights are on them, so your bullet may not penetrate as well as it does when they’re unfrozen. Might be better to just club it. Once to knock the ice off, a second time to kill it.

There are other ways OP, that arent illegal or unethical. Sit in a blind over a bunch of corn and get to your spot extra early. If possible get dropped off by utv or golf cart etc etc.

Just lose the weight brother. You can do it. One year of hard dieting can change your entire life around. Hunting is one of thousands of things that will be easier after you lose weight.

Medical issues? Exercise is just a piece of it but just dieting will likely help a ton. My dad (70) is currently dieting and he lives a very sedentary lifestyle. So far he went from 320 to about 270 now. He replaced 2 meals with protein shakes and just has one meal a day now. He's been at it for less than a year. All of his blood work is looking much better and his doctor is happy with him.

Is this serious? Deer in the headlights is a 30 second type of thing. So how are you sneaking in during that period?

You could (illegally) do this by being in the car and shooting them from it.

1

LuciusDickusMaximus

I would already be close enough to the deer before the car arrived, then I would get close enough to shoot after it was frozen
