ive been a "librarian" for a couple of months now after having a pretty rough go at it after college. this job has been the first time i feel like an adult rather than a grown teen, and i feel like it's something im actually good at, but recently i have come to think that perhaps i am too good at it, if that makes sense
first there's the way i got the job. after a lot of moping and homebody activities, my mom convinced me to go for a walk with her, where we stumbled on a community corkscrew board with the job posting. obviously not suspicious at the time, but it is weird that i only happened to learn of the opportunity because she convinced me to go walk, and the route she took me on made no sense. there is literally a scenic nature trail by our house, but she chose to walk through a sewage processing plant that smelled horrible. i am certain we were tresspassing.
so there was that, but no alarm bells started ringing til recently. even when i was hired on the spot after an interview where i was really just asked what books i liked, i think i needed a win so bad i did not clock it. but recently every other day at work seems like some elaborately set up puzzle for me to become a manufactured "hero".
i will give an example. today, there was a missing book that no one could find and everyone seemed super worried about. my manager asked me to "run point" on the issue, and i started by looking where the book should have been. i noticed that in its place was a book that belonged in a completely different shelf. i went over to put this book in its proper shelf, and when i got there, there was another book that belonged elsewhere. i placed the proper book on the shelf, then went to go put the new misplaced book in its proper place and... this repeated a ton more times until i finally found the missing book we were originally looking for. what is strange is this was about the fifth time this exact set of circumstances has occurred.
i can't believe this ruse anymore. i think my mom is paying the library to have me volunteer there, and they literally don't have enough work for me. often times, my tasks will involve walking to other library branches in our system, some almost 4 miles away, and deliver a single book that was requested. One day i did 3 of these trips in a day.
the other weird thing is i have not gotten paid yet. at least, i cannot access my bank account to know if i have gotten a direct deposit, which my mom said she set up for me, but i thought the first paycheck was always physical and that never arrived. for now i am not too worried about finances as i have no expenses, and i'd rather figure out if my job is real before i go about getting the money.
it has also been nice to have something to do. part of me wants to just pretend it is real and settle into this routine, but i can't help but wonder what my mom would think of my mental facilities if she thought i needed to be tricked into thinking i have a job. so what should i do?

huh. So kind of like a low stakes Truman show.
Idk what's going on. I honestly don't. But I will say that sometimes when you work a job that doesn't have a lot of actual work to do, the intense weird feeling of guilt at not working to your full potential can drive you a bit crazy.

If you are in the states you would have had to fill out paperwork, especially for a w-2. You will certainly find out come tax time if this is a real job. It's not a bad thing for your family to give you a leg up in the world. The fact of the matter is that many many people get help from family. There is no shame in that you just have to appreciate it. And having something to do even if it is an easy job is good for people.
But I do think you need to start being more assertive or active in your life. Even if you don't have bills you really should know if your paycheck came and you really should be in control of your bank account. It seems like maybe you are a touch passive try being a bit more assertive and taking more control of things in your life like your finances.
Otherwise enjoy the easy job that is giving you experience to put on your resume.

OP are you an adult? Have you had a job before? Do you have any intellectual disabilities?
Jobs require you to provide legal documentation like your social security card, sign paperwork agreeing to job duties and wages, and
You would have specific hours on a written or digital schedule that you are required to be there for, and you would not be assigned random tasks - you would have a station or a job description, and would have been trained
