Redditors of Greek Orthodox faith, how did you react when your religion was taught in middle school as "Greek Mythology"?

...that's not what Greek Orthodoxy is.

Yes, I probably would feel the same. I'm an atheist but it never seemed right to me that someone's religion would be so misrepresented. Kind of patronizing IMHO

Greek mythology is Hellenic Paganism.

Greek Orthodoxy is a Christian denomination that came to prominence after the Great Schism.

Thanks for providing these! Hopefully someone in this predicament stumbles on this thread and can bring up these links when they get to Greek Mythology in middle school.

No. I think what you're missing is that when the Greek mythology is taught that is NOT Greek Orthodoxy being taught as "mythology". They are separate things. They come from different cultural origins.

It'd be like asking Lutherans how they feel about their religion being represented as a mythology when kids hear the stories of Paul Bunyan and Babe the Blue Ox.

So um, I was missing half of the conversation so never mind.

I'm not Greek Orthodox, but I do follow Hellenismos.

I wish it had been taught truly, but, whatever.
