Because I decently sized house will set you back 300,000 or maybe more depending on the building materials

And location. $300k gets you two very different houses in NYC vs. some quiet suburb.

I live in Denver, and 300,000 gets you a cheaply made, small house, in a bad neighborhood. Here a descent sized house starts around 425,000.
