Why sad music make you feel better when you are already sad? Should not happy music do that?

It's kind of validating. Sadness should be felt in order for one to get better, and listening to sad music makes you feel like your sadness is being recognized. Especially if it's a song that accurately describes your feelings. Listening to a happy song while sad will often feel pretty dissonant and not at all relatable.

Happy music can be annoying when you’re sad

Nothing externally makes you feel bad or good. You are ultimately always responsible for that.

There's no way to layer happiness on top of sadness to eliminate the sadness - sadness doesn't get cured by happiness, it gets cured by comfort. Sad songs are comforting - I'm not alone, other people suffer, heartache is universal, etc.

Great, we'll do an experiment. Which of these statements irritates you more:

  • Be happy! There are plenty of things to be happy about! Happiness is everywhere!

or

  • Hey, it's OK to be sad. Everybody gets sad. Sad things happen!

Weird. Maybe it's just in the presentation. Music tends to have a deep emotional resonance that's impossible to reproduce in simple text.
