If you pull off a heist, you should not be charged with a crime

To be clear, I mean robbing a fancy item like from an art museum or a Walmart or someone's house. If you manage to heist it without getting caught, you should be granted immunity after say like 76 hours after the heist. If they catch you before then, obviously you did not do a good job so you should be executed.

Museums are very easy to steal from, though movies would tell you otherwise. Sometimes a museum doesn't know something has gone for quite a while after it was stolen. It's a cute idea, but 'stealing from a museum and keeping out of sight for three days' isn't a particularly hard caper.

Nah, you just need to read a little and maybe visit a few museums. They really don't have much in the way of security, and all sorts of art has been stolen in really mundane ways.

I mean, after all, these places live off endowments and ticket sales - the art might be priceless, but their income isn't. They're generally not going to have security measures like 'live floors', laser webs, and teams of submachinegun-armed troopers running guard duty every night...

IIRC I remember reading about some dude who just literally walked in looked at a vase and then took it, walked out. That's it. I mean he got caught, but it took an art official guy to notice it was missing at all.

The problem isn't stealing art, it's selling the stolen art. Who is gonna spend 20 million on that Van Gogh that's been stolen out of the national museum 3 weeks ago?

Wismuth_Salix

Rich assholes, just like every other ill-gotten good.

They buy blood diamonds, ffs - you think they’re gonna balk at a purloined Picasso?

"Hello there sir. I know you have a lot of money. Would you be interested in this stolen piece of priceless art for only 10 million moneys?"

If they wanted it, they'd have stolen it themselves

I love that you deem immediate execution the punishment for failing to pull off a heist lmao

At first I was like "what? Someone Rob's me and can just get away with it? Nah, fuck that." But then you made it a game by adding rules. 1. You don't get caught in 72 hours, it's yours. 2. If you do, you die!

24

theUSpopulation

If they catch you before then, obviously you did not do a good job so you should be executed.

Why not expand this to: if you get caught AT ALL, then you did not do a good job? Because technically, what you want is already the case. Even if the police catch you 50 years later, then you did something wrong enough for them to catch you. But if you die and never gain the legacy of a criminal, then you pulled off the heist.

this already happens... it’s called doing a good job and not getting caught.

So you agree with the general concept of statute of limitations, you just think it should be much, much shorter.

Not sure what gets accomplished here.

Upvote cause I disagree with this.

Someone stole the Wizard of Oz ruby slippers in 2005. As a kid, I saw them just days before they were stolen. They were missing for well over a decade but got recovered a few years ago.

Despite all my searching, I didn’t see a single name or conviction. Doesn’t seem like anyone was charged for the theft, which was very successful. So there may be truth to this statement.

You get an hour for how many dollars the item is worth. you steal a $0.99 item they get one hour to catch you steal 3 million dollar item and they have a lifetime to catch you

This post is retarded. Pulling off a heist = you get away = you do not get charged with a crime. That is how the world already works

This is the wood elves is Elder scrolls. They have this unspoken tradition called right of theft. If you steal something of value it is rightfully yours and the other person has to do something of your choice to get it back. If they want it back at least. You could also steal it back if that works.

Biggest issue I see is framing. Someone else is mistaken for you.. or is coincidentally lined up with circumstantial evidence concerning their whereabouts.. or is kidnapped by police and executed in your stead as a corrupt hit-job with fabricated evidence or bribed signatures from whatever presiding authority.. or just because racism/xenophobia/lgbt-phobia.. Innocent people are gonna be punished and/or killed because of corruption.

I think its already like this, if you pull off the perfect Heist no one will know it's you. Sure there will be someone with charges against them, but they don't know who that someone is. So you're fine. Just don't get caught. But that's the same with every other crime.

I feel like that would be an interesting setting. I could definitely watch a series in a world where this rule goes.

But I have to disagree with putting this rule in reality. I feel like if you get caught even if it was after 76 hours it is not a succesful heist. If they find out enough to be able to identify you, you lose.

I believe it is possible to perform a succesful heist. The sky is the limit and all that.

(Also it would be unethical to create a rule that promotes fancy stealing. The law is the limit.)

P.S. Why 76h? Was there any special reason?

Reminds me of Danganronpa. If you do a murder and don't get caught, you're free! If not, you die.

AMAZING

Maybe in your opinion. Honestly there are several issues with the writing that killed my enjoyment of the game. I will agree that the characters are what make the series, the plot honestly sucks but the interesting characters are the only thing that I like about it.

2

DiamondCake445

Its a popular visual novel and anime series called danganronpa. The basics is 15 students in highschool are trapped in some building (the first game it was a school, the second it was an island, and so on). The only way to get out of the building is if you murder someone and get away with it. If you get away with it, then you earned the right to leave the building, however every other student dies. If you don't get away with it, you die.

It's actually like that in real life. You are only punished if you are caught. Quite crazy.

Pretty sure he meant that if you get caught after, they take the stolen goods back, but you dont get punished for the crime

10

Billy_Billboard

Well then the heist was not succesful.

23

Anon___1991

Well obviously not, but I think op may have been caught heisting something after 76 hours of the heist, and that's why he's saying this should be a rule. Otherwise he just got some weird 76 hour bullshit going on here.

Why heists in specific?

18

[deleted]

Because that means there was a security venerability that wasn’t addressed.

32

Fauxton789

Sure, but that's like saying you shouldn't prosecute a spy becuase well they showed us that our screening process wasn't airtight enough. I'm all for respecting the skill of other people but making heists the only exception to the rule feels like a weird call.

9

FarragoSanManta

This happens in the USA. It is called a statute of limitations.

[deleted]

Depends. The statute of limitations varies wildly by state. Some states have no statute of limitations on crimes involving any forgery or counterfeiting, so if the heist involved any of that (e.g. creating fake jewels to swap out the real ones with, Ocean's 8 style) the statue of limitations wouldn't apply. There are also factors like if and what kind of weapons were used, if anyone was harmed, age of involved parties, etc. Some states don't have a statute of limitations on any felonies at all actually.

In most states yes, a simple "get in, steal shit, get out" heist would be around 5-10 years before the SOL expires but it's really not that black and white, there are many more factors.
