Yeah, it's got a lot of actual numbers in it. Advanced math is generally more abstract, which means more symbols and fewer actual numbers. But it's not like mathematicians never use numbers. Working an actual example with actual numbers can build intuition.

That's hilarious.

I feel like this is only true in general cases. If you're working out a real world example out you would replace the place holder symbols and letters with real numbers. Also with these examples using a graph or something to help visualize the data is common, like the one in the upper left..... I think.

Honestly the only time I'd ever do algebra with actual decimal numbers is if I was working with a student who wasn't fully comfortable with the idea that a symbol could represent a number. I'll always use a symbol for the number, first because it's shorter to write and second because then at the end I get to see what formula I derived - that often gives some additional insight and sanity checking. The actual values of the numbers get fed into a computer at the end and are otherwise pretty unimportant.

I'm 80% sure this is simple maths, that leaves me 30% unsure.

It’s not that simple.
2
It’s exceedingly simple math. It might be

Simple math for me is like 6 times 5.

Well, as long as you don’t work in mathematics, that’s just fine :)
But considering the math his character was supposedly capable of teaching himself at a master level, it just doesn’t really line up with the stuff written in the notebook.
Like. If you had a notebook where you wrote down:
“1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6....” as of it were interesting math to muse about :p

Going from "6 times 5" to "5 times 68" in your head isn't that hard.
Just do it in two steps like 5 70 - 5 2 or 5 60 + 5 8. Those are pretty easy to do in your head in about five seconds.

It's just OP humble bragging

That stuff is easy to solve with a calculator.

Yeah, this is pretty clearly prop math just to give a layman a sense of "Ooh, mathematics!" unless something else corroborates this.

I agree, after all he does solve the unsolvable problem on the chalkboard.

This is simple with a calculator, or long hand. but if he'd been doing it in his head this is pretty difficult.

Yeah, it’s the same reason why the main character’s catchy hit song usually isn’t that catchy, the artist’s brilliant poem is kinda lame, and the scientist’s genius insight makes no intuitive sense: screenwriters are good at screenwriting, not those other things.
5
Yeah I really hated the 'big song' from A Star is Born. It's annoyingly unfinished!

People will say its just simple math, but if someone asks you what 3 x (price of something with decimals) is, I bet almost everyone would pull out a calculator or need to write it down.
2
honestly sometimes you just gotta visualise the stuff
2
That's still simple math. It's still just a multiplication process. Advanced math would involve reducing the equation or multiplying multiple equations until you get an answer in which you can then use simple math to solve. Even if that simple math is 3x$45.67, but it took advanced math to get to that point.
