In Good Will Hunting (1997), Will's notebook is full of very basic math, suggesting the whole movie is his delusion.

That's... Simple math? Hoo boy...

Yeah, it's got a lot of actual numbers in it. Advanced math is generally more abstract, which means more symbols and fewer actual numbers. But it's not like mathematicians never use numbers. Working an actual example with actual numbers can build intuition.

This kind of reminds me of Rob Gronkowski's take on math.

That's hilarious.

I feel like this is only true in general cases. If you're working out a real world example out you would replace the place holder symbols and letters with real numbers. Also with these examples using a graph or something to help visualize the data is common, like the one in the upper left..... I think.

Honestly the only time I'd ever do algebra with actual decimal numbers is if I was working with a student who wasn't fully comfortable with the idea that a symbol could represent a number. I'll always use a symbol for the number, first because it's shorter to write and second because then at the end I get to see what formula I derived - that often gives some additional insight and sanity checking. The actual values of the numbers get fed into a computer at the end and are otherwise pretty unimportant.

I'm 80% sure this is simple maths, that leaves me 30% unsure.

It’s not that simple.

It’s exceedingly simple math. It might be

Simple math for me is like 6 times 5.

Well, as long as you don’t work in mathematics, that’s just fine :)

But considering the math his character was supposedly capable of teaching himself at a master level, it just doesn’t really line up with the stuff written in the notebook.

Like. If you had a notebook where you wrote down:
“1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6....” as of it were interesting math to muse about :p

Going from "6 times 5" to "5 times 68" in your head isn't that hard.

Just do it in two steps like 5 70 - 5 2 or 5 60 + 5 8. Those are pretty easy to do in your head in about five seconds.

I did check the first number and it was correct. Also yes, that’s basic math, ignore the letter and solve it, not even algebra.

This is basic math? Great. Now I feel dumb again.

I'm not super familiar with the math used in the movie, but it looks like he's solving specific values in a tensor. The variables have superscripts and subscripts, and he's doing the algebra by hand to solve for some key points.

It does sort of feel like a fantasy not that you mention it. His genius in the movie is like a superpower, he's constantly getting the better of people with it, proving that he's smarter than everyone over and over. And then he just decides that he doesn't want the superquant job and says "Exactly. That's an honorable profession. What's wrong with..with fixing somebody's car. Someone can get to work the next day because of me. There's honor in that." He's saying that he's choosing blue collar work for himself, he's not forced into it because he doesn't have the qualifications to be a quant or a mathematician.

He is actually calculating Chi Square and p-values for a comparative analysis of expected vs actual observations. This is more heavily statistics rather than 'advanced math'.

I hate these ‘it was all a dream’ theories. What does that add to the message or story the movie was trying to tell? It’s just a gimmick.

Not sure about this one, I think it needs other details in the movie to also point toward this possibility? Otherwise it's just that the director had someone scribble the most advanced maths they knew into a notebook.

Yeah, this is pretty clearly prop math just to give a layman a sense of "Ooh, mathematics!" unless something else corroborates this.

I agree, after all he does solve the unsolvable problem on the chalkboard.

This is simple with a calculator, or long hand. but if he'd been doing it in his head this is pretty difficult.

Yeah, it’s the same reason why the main character’s catchy hit song usually isn’t that catchy, the artist’s brilliant poem is kinda lame, and the scientist’s genius insight makes no intuitive sense: screenwriters are good at screenwriting, not those other things.

Yeah I really hated the 'big song' from A Star is Born. It's annoyingly unfinished!

People will say its just simple math, but if someone asks you what 3 x (price of something with decimals) is, I bet almost everyone would pull out a calculator or need to write it down.

2

thiqdikkflex

honestly sometimes you just gotta visualise the stuff

2

TractorMan90

That's still simple math. It's still just a multiplication process. Advanced math would involve reducing the equation or multiplying multiple equations until you get an answer in which you can then use simple math to solve. Even if that simple math is 3x$45.67, but it took advanced math to get to that point.
