A couple weeks ago, I got the idea to build a catapult so I wouldn't have to go down six flights of stairs to take my trash out (I live in an apartment complex). I could simply load my trash onto the catapult and launch it into the dumpster in the alley.
After deliberations with friends and some college engineering students, I decided to make my catapult out of about 600 metal spoons (I used to work at a restaurant and they used to give us spoons in lieu of bonuses during the financial crisis) and all the rubberbands I can get my hands on.
Only issue is I'm unsure of how to make sure the catapult will be able to launch 20 pounds of trash across a 30 foot wide, 50 feet deep gap directly into the 8ftx3ft opening of the dumpster, all without the trash going everywhere.
According to my very basic calculations, the launching mechanism will be 2 feet long and should consist of roughly 231 spoons. The base of the catapult needs at least 255 spoons to keep it from tipping upon launch. The rest, I will wing. Will this work?

Seeing as they're making this out of spoons and rubber bands, I'm going to guess they shouldn't be trusted with welding equipment

Even with testing, your bag of trash will weight differently and/or have different shapes that will influence how it flights.
It would be easier to catapult a magnet block, holding an end of the zipline, and drop the your trash without spreading it over the air.
That being said, I have to say, make sure that there are absolutely nobody walking below the flight path. Unless you got enough money for lawyers ^^
