While cleaning out the remains of my family's burned storage unit, I found my GameBoy as well as my copy of Fire Red and thought: Well, I'm home from Uni now, might as well! To my surprise, the system worked and I was instantly transported back to my childhood. As I heard the nostalgic music and named my rival "Penis," I felt like a kid again. I decided within seconds of booting up that this summer, I would beat all of the Pokemon games I could, and with that I dove headfirst into the crazy world of Fire Red.
But almost instantly, I was sucked out of that childhood feeling as though I was on an aeroplane and the window next to me had smashed open. All of the blatant political propaganda, which went way over my head as a child, hit me like a school bus. I thought I could ignore it, but it can't be avoided. If you're wondering, here are a few of the things I'm talking about:
Universal healthcare: The Pokemon world has some sort of single-payer healthcare system in which anyone at any time can walk into a hospital and heal their injured Pokemon from any injury, free of charge. And it's presented as such a utopia: there's never any lines, no waitlists for pokemon who need transplants, nothing. Really? Is that very realistic? And somehow, these centers just exist and operate, even though I've never been "Poketaxed." I know Pokemon isn't supposed to be realistic, but come on. This is just blatant propaganda.
Names of certain Pokemon: As a kid, the fact that "Ekans" was "Snake" backwards blew my mind. Yet my undeveloped brain didn't notice some of the other codes in the names. For example, "Farfetch'd." On the surface, it's obviously a play on the word "farfetched," meaning unrealistic. But why this name? I haven't seen anything online to confirm this theory, but I'm like 80% sure its a commentary on the American system: Farfetch'd is a hairless eagle, and guess which country has a bald eagle as its emblem? It's crazy how once you realize the political undertones of this game, you suddenly notice small details like that. There are multiple other examples, like Weezing being a reference to air pollution (no doubt a commentary on industrialization).
THE MUSIC: I really fucking hate that I discovered this because I love love love the music. Fire Red's music is my favorite of any video game. However, I discovered something. The music is mostly based on the A Major key, which was the favorite musical key of the Soviets. Now, this isn't proof of anything since a shit ton of music is written in A minor just because it sounds good. But I listened to all the town themes, and there are multiple that are really similar to Soviet music. Take, for example, the Vermillion City theme. If you slow it down to 0.5 speed, there are several segments that sound eerily similar to the Communist Internationale. I know this might sound really stupid or, to use the name of our good friend, farfetch'd, but it literally sounds like an 8-bit version of the Internationale. Listen to it yourself, I linked both right above.
I could go on and on, but I'm getting carp and tunnel from typing this. My point is, I returned to Pokemon because I wanted to take a break from the politicized world but it just seems like I can't escape it in these games. I think I'll still play, but I sense that eventually there will be a straw that breaks the camel's back. W/e. Gotta catch'em all i guess.

Not sure if this is meant to be taken seriously. The health care thing was one thing but just “wow” at the rest. Anyway, the Pokémon Center is just a game mechanic. You lose money when your team faints. The game would be literally unplayable if you had to pay for the return of your Pokémon to full health after losing all your money in a fight. In any case, the anime does a great job of giving a more realistic take on Pokémon Centers. Yes, it’s still a free service, and they even go so far as to house traveling trainers. But the capabilities and capacity of the Centers are put into perspective in the early show.
The rest is clearly unreasonable but in case you didn’t know: Farfetch’d is a duck

posting the same thing to 3 subs. Either you really felt you had a banger here or even worse, you're not being entirely ironic.
Anyway, 6 out of 10. It's clear more than no effort was made, but you didn't take the bit quite far enough to bring it to "pants on head bonkers, grasping at straws" level it needed to reach.

I’m not sure what is being implied here? That I’ve reposted?
