[TOMT][IDIOM] What's that saying that's like "you're in for a bad wake up" or something?

My english teacher in high school used to say this to me all the time when I told him I didn't need to read the books cuz I was gonna be a millionaire one day. It was something with waking up, and essentially meant "when you get into the real world you're gonna be shocked." The reason I want to know is because I just found out the english in teacher in question was hit by a bus (he survived) and I want to message him on facebook the saying as a kind of last laugh lol.

Solved! That's it! And it does make sense cuz he was knocked unconscious and now has to go to physical therapy; i'd call that a rude awakening hahahaha

It’s not…it means you thought one way about something specific for a while and were naive. Unless he spent time telling you he won’t ever get hit by a bus, it makes no sense in that use. This English teacher is just going to laugh at your bad usage.
