Yes, it was notable that one country could control the rest of Europe for that long, but honestly it irks me when people say "well we are still heavily influenced by the Romans." Like, ok? In what sense? That we use their numerals? So many civilizations have made numerals that MEAN THE SAME THING. One is one no matter if it looks like a straight line or an onion. The ruins are also ugly as fuck. If you want a better time, look at the Greeks or the Mesopotamians.

“The aqueduct?”
“Oh. Yeah, yeah. They did give us that. Uh, that’s true. Yeah.”
“And the sanitation.”
“Oh, yeah, the sanitation, Reg. Remember what the city used to be like?”
“Yeah. All right. I’ll grant you the aqueduct and the sanitation are two things that the Romans have done.”
“All right, but apart from the sanitation, the medicine, education, wine, public order, irrigation, roads, a fresh water system, and public health, what have the Romans ever done for us?”
“Brought peace.”
“Oh. Peace? Shut up!”

I think it’s fair. Any ideas and technology we have from Rome were mediated through medieval and early modern people. And a lot of that stuff was adopted by Rome from someone else. Finally, contemporary Han China was about as developed.
I think it has its place in culture mainly because in western Eurasia, Rome had immense prestige that lasted centuries. German and Russian empires invoked Rome to sound more legitimate. The biggest holdover is probably government buildings, which people in many countries still want to look like Roman buildings.
The more I learn about history, the more I think no society is special. They’re all made out of regular people. And they all want to feel special.
